Newborn Photo Shoot Tips

From the warm cuddles to the unpredictability, I LOVE photographing newborns!

Heads up, things book up fast so be sure to contact me during the middle to end of your pregnancy. If you are planning on doing maternity photos they are best to be done between 32-37 weeks. Here are a few tips to help prepare for your newborn session.

Once your due date is penciled in put me on the list of people to notify from the hospital, then shoot me a email/text so I can get you booked in.

The best time for newborns is within the first 10 days when they are the sleepiest. After that they tend to be more aware of their environment and harder to get those cute sleepy poses.

All newborn session are done in your home, in your natural environment. Don’t worry if your house isn’t spotless, you just had a baby. If you have time make sure to tidy the rooms we will be shooting in, bedroom, living room, and nursery. For the most party the main focus will be tight in of just the baby, using the best natural window light.

Typically newborns sessions take about 2-3 hours and are done in the mid morning when baby is most content and we have great natural window light. This allows time for feeds, changing and if they do become fussy to have some snuggle time.

Keep your home a bit warmer by turning up the heat as it helps baby stay sleepy. Yes, by the end of the session we may be sweating but anything to keep baby cozy and sleeping. I also have a white noise machine that I bring, to help sooth and relax baby.

Right before the session, strip the baby down to a clean diaper and swaddle them. Then give them a good feed so that they are happy, aka “milk drunk”.

My style for newborns is as seen in my portfolio. I keep it as natural as possible without props or unnatural poses. Less in more! I will bring a few swaddles and blankets but for the most part if you have any of your own set them aside, it’s nice to use a few of your own items to make the photos more personal. As well neutral onesies are great, have a few set aside as options. For mommas, wear what you feel most comfortable in. Something neutral and loose fitting, here is a link to some inspiration on what to wear -

If we are incorporating parents and/or siblings we will either do that at the beginning or the end of the shoot, babies and children will dictate how the session will flow. Then when it’s just the babies turn, best to have the other children leave the room to keep a clam environment for baby.

Finally it’s very important to be relaxed. I’m very comfortable and have many years of experience handling babies. A baby can sense stress or anxiety so it’s important everyone stays relaxed. Feel free to put your feet up, have a coffee or even take a quick nap!

Canadian Rocky Mountain Wedding Venues

So lucky that the Canadian Rockies are in my backyard, I shoot 80% of my weddings here and I get to meet lovely couples from all over the world. From a meadow to a castle ballroom, there is not one location or venue that disappoints. Here are my top 3 favourite wedding venues in Canmore, Banff and Lake Louse.

Silvertip in Canmore

Located in the same area as the Grande Rockies Resort, the Silvertip is also a great option for Calgary residents. The property, which is perched on the side of the Bow Valley, boasts 600 sunny acres of grasslands, waters, mountain peaks and valleys. If you’d rather say your “i dos” indoors, there’s a banquet room with a capacity of 250 guests available.

Eight breathtaking chandeliers, hardwood floors, and decorations of blue, burgundy, and gold make this ballroom perfect for a wedding celebration.

  • The Alhambra Ballroom: Your guests will be awestruck as they step through the custom cast bronze door and into the Spanish Renaissance-styled Alhambra Ballroom. It boasts large windows, high ceilings, and the four chandeliers that cast the perfect radiance as your guests dance the night away. It is perfect for ceremonies and receptions and can accommodate up to 220 guests.

  • Ivor Petrak Room: This intimate space is perfect for hosting beautiful ceremonies and receptions with up to 60 guests. Dance the night away under the central chandelier, and experience the charming view of the sweeping Bow Valley.

G&M | Lake Minnewanka Engagement Session

Love this session with G&M! Two of the most beautiful people inside and out. They live in California and are having a destination wedding in May at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louse. I can’t wait to see what the talented ladies at Julianne Young Weddings come up with.

Wedding Day Time-Line

So many of my clients ask me about how their wedding day should flow and how much time they should allocate to each portion of their day. If your not working with a wedding planner the next best person to help with this is your photographer. I am always happy to work with my clients to help make the best time-line that works with them and all vendors.

The time-line is a guideline to help keep the day on track, however this will not alway go as planned and thats okay. The main thing is keeping the start and end times on time so that all the vendors can provide the best service as possible.

When I work on a time-line with clients I build the day around the ceremony time, next is when would be the best time for portraits. If the client is having an early ceremony then I would suggest portraits after the ceremony, if they are having a later ceremony then doing a first look and portraits before the ceremony. You can check out more about first looks here. First Look

These are based on my 9 hour packages, you can all ways add extra hours to your day. And keeping in mind these are just suggestions that don’t take into consideration travel time between venues or of other traditions that might be a part of your day.

If you can afford a wedding planner I highly recommend using one, there are many other time-line that need to be made as well coordinating all the other vendors, helping make the day run smoothly. For more on why to hire a wedding planner check out our friends at Julianne Young Weddings.

Calgary Backyard Brunch Wedding

The whole concept of ‘urban backyard wedding’ is already pretty unique in itself—you get the best of both the modern vibe and the gorgeous garden setting. But Kismet & Clover took it all up a notch when they opted for a brunch menu too. Not only is it totally up our alley, it shows the softest, loveliest side of brunch too.
